The freight market today

45 public series across fuel, trucking, rail, ocean and air, freight volume, carriers, warehousing, inventories, procurement and trade — what every freight bill you audit is measured against.

Public figures from the U.S. agencies that measure them (the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the Bureau of Transportation Statistics, the Census Bureau, the Energy Information Administration, the Bureau of Economic Analysis), via FRED. Each is dated by its publisher and read again once a day. No figure here is made by ZetaVolt.

What has been published about freight bill auditing

Industry estimates, not a guarantee. Your results depend on your carriers, contracts and bills.

How often bills are wrong, and where

What a pre-audit saves

  • 2% to 4% of monthly freight spend saved by catching invoice errors with a prepayment audit, as one provider described its customers’ results.

Source: Inbound Logistics (trade magazine) · published September 2015 · read 2026-10-29

  • About 0.5% ongoing savings on the audit itself once a shipper is an established client of an audit provider (“around one-half of 1%”).

Source: Inbound Logistics, Logistics Planner · published September 2023 · read 2026-10-29

What a post-audit can still claim

What can still be claimed depends on the clocks: a bill contested in writing within 180 days of receipt (49 U.S.C. § 13710), an overcharge suit within 18 months (§ 14705), and your contract’s own window when it is shorter. Older bills are goodwill — the carrier may decline.

ZetaVolt will publish its own clients’ results here once there are case studies.
